Felt art maps

Maps create interesting images, visual representations of a physical space.
Adding a texture and altering the purpose of a map becomes an exercise in 2d manipulation.
How can you make it resemble the physical space, be a work of art, and all be out of fabric?

This felt rug is a topographical map of Mt. Ranier, an active stratocolcano in Washington.
